Chook Book

Chook - the great Australian vernacular for chicken. It’s never a roast chicken in our house it is a roast chook, as it is all over Australia.

Also the central point for Australian sayings: ‘Running around like a headless chook’ - a disorganised person, ‘Feeding the chooks’ – To masturbate (male hand action)

Terms of derision - ‘chook head’ for a person lacking a strong chin, ‘old chooks’ – a group of older (usually women) folk keen for a chat.

Chooks are a subject of intrigue for me and always have been since I used to net them on our hobby farm as a child of six. My mum always said that she knew when I had been chasing the chooks and catching them in my nets. She reckoned it stopped them laying. She was right, so I took to catching them on the Sunday just before we left to return to the city. This way I wouldn’t get into trouble as they would lay a few eggs before we returned the following weekend.
