Coolibah Tree

Coolibah Tree, Jason Kimberley's latest series of photographs encourages a journey into the imagination. This exhibition reflects his love of the Australian landscape and represents the artists desire to capture the essence of the environment. The audience is left contemplating the combination of iconography and the intriguing visual discourse that Kimberley has created.

A New Artistic Elements introduced in Coolibah Tree and represents a transition from Kimberley's earlier photographic series Australia Exposed, which reflected a more documentary style of photography. The same theme of man's relationship with the land and the visual beauty of the landscape is drawn upon for both.

The works in this exhibition represent a balletic poem to the fragility of the outback environment and the vulnerability of its inhabitants. The wine box stripped bare of its box takes on balloon-like qualities when released: there is also a reflective quality that mirrors the ground and the sky. Filled with helium they scuttle about like penguins across the clay pan. When put together in bunches, they carry the fish up into the sky to survey the vastness around them.

For Kimberley, the fish in the bag of water is the memory of childhood pets. It is also a strange creature in a strange land. It's future is determined by the strength of the plastic bag and where it may or may not drift. It is a fish in water but also a fish out of water, and out of it's depth at the same time.
