Dead Cars and Rusty Barrels

Dead Cars and Rusty Barrels is a collection of images taken by Melbourne photographer Jason Kimberley on two recent trips he made to remote areas of Australia.

Following the success of his first exhibition ‘Australia Exposed’ in 2003 and the launch of his book of the same name, Jason took to the road again. Still armed with his trusted SLR 35mm camera. The images are testament to this colourful journey.

In October last year Jason travelled to the Northern Territory and spent time in the Gulf (Carpentaria) Country where he sought out the ‘Dead Car Yard’ on the cattle stations he visited in the area.

Other images from Dead Cars and Rusty Barrels were taken when Jason was drawn back to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia where he spent days exploring the desolate beauty. It was the tiny outspot of Lyndhurst that captured his imagination and provided him with many of the images that comprise this exhibition.

‘These dead car yards have their own visual poetry they are filled with dashed hopes, broken dreams, memories of another life' comments Jason. ‘I am fascinated with rust and decay – So many possibilities, the true interface between human creation and nature’s destruction.’

Dead Cars and Rusty Barrels exhibited in Melbourne in August 2004 at Nellie Castan Gallery. The exhibition was also shown at the Michael Carr Gallery in Sydney in Queen St, Woollahra in July 2005.

Limited editions (25) of the prints are available for purchase, as are all the works on the website.
